Fun with Hunters and Jumpers!

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

I’ve done a few more new pieces, taking advantage of the many photos I’ve taken at local hunter/jumper shows. I finished these three in less than a month, just in time to take a break from painting to do some yardwork before the desert heat really sets in. I have a list of about 14+ painting ideas in various degrees of development, so my break will be short – and there will be no shortage of new pieces in upcoming months! Here’s the latest:

More Desert Oasis…

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

Here’s another refreshing desert monsoon scene, something that will become more appealing over the next few months as the summer heat sets in.

Unfortunately, it’s unfinished. It’s very close to done, but I just have that nagging feeling like something else is needed. I’ll hang it on my wall where I can observe it for a few days/weeks before I know exactly how to procede next. At some point the perfect plan of action will inevitably hit me like an inspired brick… and that is the closest I get to being psychic, folks.

Painting isn’t always the most predictable process, sometimes there’s a point where you need to stop and think about your next move lest you take a wrong turn and ruin the piece. The real skill lies in knowing when step back.

In the meantime, I’m working on some other pieces, so there will be new work that is actually completed soon.

Untitled (so far) 24 x 30 acrylic on canvas.

Birth of a painting

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

This is a new painting I did last week, and I made sure to take the time to photograph it as I worked. The pictures were taken at different times of day so the lighting and quality vary, but you can see how a painting is born.

Currently untitled, this is done in oil on a 16″ x 20″ canvas. I used a direct painting method where the image is painted in color directly on the canvas (simple enough), a technique I use occasionally.
